Recent media reports regarding the status of Oklahoma State University student-athlete Mr. Dez Bryant are wrong and misleading. Contrary to numerous media inaccuracies, the university declared the student-athlete ineligible, not the NCAA. During the process to restore eligibility, schools must submit a request for reinstatement of a student-athlete’s eligibility to the NCAA. To that end, Oklahoma State has submitted a reinstatement request to the NCAA national office.

During the reinstatement process, the NCAA staff considers a number of factors including guidelines established by the Committee on Student-Athlete Reinstatement, any relevant case precedent, the student-athlete’s responsibility for the violation, as well as any mitigating factors presented by the institution. This process has not concluded. Therefore any media stories stating the student-athlete must sit out a specific amount of games are merely conjecture without basis in fact.
