INDIANAPOLIS – Art Hyland, the current Big East Conference coordinator of men’s basketball officials, has been named NCAA Men’s Basketball Rules Committee secretary-rules editor.
“Art’s experience and passion for the game make him the ideal person for this essential role,” said Greg Shaheen, NCAA senior vice president for basketball and business strategies.
Hyland has served as the Big East Conference coordinator of men’s basketball officials for the past 26 years. He also served on the NCAA Basketball Rules Committee from 1998 – 2003, where he was the chairman from 2002 – 2003. Hyland’s basketball background includes serving as the assistant coach for the Princeton men’s basketball program, under the leadership of Willem Van Breda Kolff and then Pete Carril, from 1966 – 1972; serving as the associate commissioner for football and basketball operations at the Eastern College Athletic Conference from 1972 – 1984; and ultimately the dual role of his Big East Conference responsibilities while also practicing law as an attorney in Hyannis, Mass., since 1984.
“I am thrilled to accept this position and look forward to working together with the rules committee and basketball community to keep our great game headed in the right direction,” said Hyland.
Hyland graduated from Princeton University in 1963, where he was a member of the varsity basketball team for three years. He went on to earn his Juris Doctorate degree, graduating cum laude, from the New England School of Law in 1983.
Hyland will begin his duties as secretary-rules editor in May. He will succeed Ed Bilik, the NCAA men’s basketball rules interpreter since 1997, who announced his retirement last year.
