INDIANAPOLIS – For the second consecutive year, the NCAA is teaming with the American Cancer Society and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) to support the “StrikeOut Cancer” initiative. The StrikeOut Cancer Night presented by AT&T will take place on Tuesday, June 8, during Game 2 of the finals of the 2010 NCAA Women’s College World Series at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla.
As part of the initiative, the NCAA will donate one dollar for every ticket sold that evening, with the proceeds directed to the Oklahoma Region of the American Cancer Society. The ceremonial first pitch will be thrown by Megan Melott, a rowing student-athlete from the University of Tulsa and a cancer survivor. Also taking part will be Wilson Holloway, who will lead the singing of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during the fifth-inning of the game. Mr. Holloway is a football student-athlete from the University of Tulsa and a cancer survivor as well.
In addition, spectators attending the game will be asked to wear pink in support of “StrikeOut Cancer.” The game will be televised live on ESPN2 at 8 p.m. Eastern.
“The NCAA Women’s College World Series is proud to support the Oklahoma Region of the American Cancer Society and its dedication to combating this devastating disease,” said Sharon Cessna, NCAA director of championships. “Supporting the American Cancer Society reflects the NCAA’s commitment to helping the Oklahoma City community that hosts our championship every year.”
“We are happy to partner with the NCAA, the NFCA and AT&T to promote the ‘StrikeOut Cancer’ initiative,” said Sara Smith, American Cancer Society of Oklahoma regional communications director. “This relationship will increase awareness about the early detection and prevention of cancer and allow us to celebrate the lives of those who have survived.”
The 2009 initiative recognized 25 cancer survivors in attendance at the opening game and the ceremonial first pitch was thrown out by a local Oklahoma City cancer survivor.
