INDIANAPOLIS—Joan Powell has been named the NCAA’s inaugural national coordinator of officials and will serve as the primary administrator of the Volleyball Officiating Program.

Powell brings a wealth of volleyball understanding and accolades to the position, having served as an official for collegiate volleyball since 1973, including several NCAA Division I Volleyball Championship appearances.

“Joan’s extensive experience and knowledge of the game will ensure that the Volleyball Officiating Program starts off in the right direction and offers great training and education for collegiate volleyball officials,” said Terry Gawlik, chair of the NCAA Division I Volleyball Committee and senior associate athletics director at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

During her career, Powell has been an official at each of the NCAA’s three divisional women’s volleyball championships, making her last appearance in 2009. She has served as the coordinator of officials for the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, served five terms as President of the Professional Association of Volleyball Officials (PAVO), was a member of the USA Volleyball (USAV) Board of Directors and the National Association of Sports Officials.

“I am honored to be asked to take this new position and excited for the opportunity,” said Powell. “I think the national coordinator’s role can serve all segments of the NCAA women’s volleyball community by understanding the issues of the officials’ cadre and their training needs, the expectations of the conferences and their coordinators, the concerns of the coaches and the mission of the championship committees from all three divisions.”

Powell’s commitment to education is reflected in her 30 years as an educator and coach at Coronado High School, where she recently retired. Powell graduated from the University of Arizona with a bachelor’s of science degree.
