CBS Sports to Air NCAA Winter Championships Show April 30For Immediate Release

INDIANAPOLIS --- For the ninth consecutive year, all 88 NCAA championships will receive television exposure, including 18 winter championships being featured in a one-hour special.
CBS Sports Presents Championships of the NCAA will air at 2:00 p.m. Eastern, Saturday, April 30, on CBS Sports. The show will feature dozens of NCAA student-athletes as they follow their dreams in basketball, fencing, ice hockey, indoor track and field, rifle, skiing, swimming and diving and wrestling. For the 2010-11 academic year, CBS Sports will feature 50 of the NCAA’s 88 championships in its three seasonal shows.
As individuals and teams pursue their ultimate goal to become an NCAA champion, some of the feature stories include:
- In NCAA Division III Men’s Swimming and Diving, the Kenyon College team looks to capture its 32nd consecutive title. But the Big Red from Denison University has been close in years past and is aiming for the upset.
- Brian Butzler began his collegiate running career in 2001, competing for the University of Wisconsin, Oshkosh for a semester before deciding to join the Army Reserves. After training, he returned to school at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater and joined the team in 2006 before leaving to serve in Afghanistan in 2009. Now a senior in his final year of eligibility, Butzler is competing in the 5,000 meter run at the Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships.
- Senior Nordic skier Carolyn Freeman of the University of Wisconsin, Green Bay was coached for three years by Butch Reimer. Shortly before the ski season began, Coach Reimer was diagnosed with leukemia and died shortly thereafter. Despite this difficult loss, Freeman has achieved some of her greatest results in her collegiate skiing career.
- Senior Albie McKinney of the University of Wisconsin, La Crosse has been wrestling since he was four years old. In the summer of 2008, McKinney was forced to deal with personal challenges away from the mat. McKinney credits the sport of wrestling for helping him gain perspective and carry him through those tough times.
- Overshadowed on their own campus by more nationally recognized sports, the University of Notre Dame is home to one of the elite fencing programs in the country. With seven national championships, the team went undefeated last season but failed to bring home a title. The Irish are back this as the favorite in this season's competition, seeking their first title since 2005.
CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson will host this edition of CBS Sports Presents Championships of the NCAA. The winter highlight program was produced by Ryan Galvin, with Alanna Campbell, Lindsay Goward, Jawn Morales and Brian Seeling serving as the feature producers.
CBS Sports has aired 25 seasonal shows from the three NCAA championship seasons (fall, winter, spring) over the last eight years. The April 30th show is the 26th edition of CBS Sports Presents Championships of the NCAA. Each seasonal show features highlights and unique NCAA student-athlete stories from a variety of NCAA Division II and III championships.
