INDIANAPOLIS---The Division II Committee on Infractions has found Brevard College violated NCAA recruiting rules. The case centered around 181 impermissible recruiting text messages and impermissible phone calls by the former track and field and cross country coach. The committee also cited the former coach for unethical conduct after he provided false and misleading information, including altered phone records, to school personnel.

Penalties in the case include one year of probation, scholarship reductions, recruiting restrictions and a two-year show-cause order that limits the former coach’s athletically related duties. The public report includes additional details.

This case was resolved through the summary disposition process, a cooperative effort where the involved parties submit the case to the Committee on Infractions in written form. When the NCAA enforcement staff, the university and involved individuals agree to the facts of the case and penalties proposed by the university, they may use this process instead of a formal hearing.

The committee noted that only one coach knowingly disregarded the rules in this case committed the violations and the school had thoroughly educated staff regarding the rules. It also indicated that school self-discovered the violations and was thorough in its investigation.

The penalties in this case are as follows:

The members of the Division II Committee on Infractions who reviewed this case include Bridget Lyons, senior associate director of athletics, Barry University; Jean Paul Bradshaw II, attorney, Lathrop & Gage L.C; Wendy Taylor May, chair and senior associate athletics director, University of California, San Diego; Julie Rochester, faculty athletic representative and associate professor for Northern Michigan University; Cary Snyder, associate director of athletics at East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania; and Harry Stinson III, assistant athletic director of compliance at Kentucky State University.
