INDIANAPOLIS--- The NCAA Division II Football Committee has reprimanded Delta State University offensive line and assistant football coach Travis Mikel for misconduct during the 2010 NCAA Division II Football Championship.

Specifically, Mikel was seen chewing tobacco on the sidelines on national television during the semifinal game against Shepherd University. NCAA rules prohibit the use of tobacco products by all game personnel in all sports during practice and competition. As a result of this public reprimand, Delta State University will not receive payment of the Association’s travel guarantee for Mikel’s participation in the championship game in Florence, Ala. Delta State University also must reimburse the NCAA for travel expenses related to Mikel, equating to an aggregate $280 financial penalty.

“The committee expects all personnel to abide by the guidelines in place and will continue to hold coaches to a high standard in regard to their behavior and actions throughout the championship,” said Shawn Jones, chair of the Division II Football Committee and associate director of athletics at the University of Central Missouri.
