NCAA To Host Violence Prevention And Intervention Summit In IndianapolisFor Immediate Release

WHAT:
The NCAA will host a summit that focuses on the prevention and intervention of interpersonal violence as it relates to student-athletes and the general student body on college campuses. The goal of the summit will be to gain a better understanding of interpersonal violence on college campuses through dialogue and identify collaborative strategies to address the issue on college campuses.
In August 2010, the NCAA executive committee charged the NCAA national office with reviewing research to determine the extent and scope of this issue and with exploring educational and leadership opportunities for the NCAA and with constituent organizations. The summit was created as a result of the executive committee charge.
WHEN: Friday, April 8, 2011
TIME: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m., Eastern time.
WHERE:
The Downtown Marriott, Indianapolis, Indiana. (located on Maryland Street). There will also be a free live web cast of the summit.
WHO:
Invited speakers and guests include representatives from the higher education community, intercollegiate athletics and college campus administrators, violence prevention subject experts, student-athletes and NCAA staff.
Media can attend in person or participate via the free web cast link. Registration is required for in-person and Web cast participation at www.ncaa.org/violenceprevention. NCAA president Mark Emmert and Student-Affairs Administrators in Higher Education (NASPA) executive director Gwen Dungy will deliver the welcome and opening remarks. John Blanchard, chair of the NCAA Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct Committee, will provide background on the NCAA executive committee charge.
Morning session facilitators include: Chris Kilmartin, University of Mary Washington; Brandi Hephner LaBanc, Northern Illinois University and NASPA; Adele Rapport, Office of Civil Rights; and Don McPherson, former Syracuse University quarterback and activist and select coaches.
Afternoon session facilitators include: Sally Linowski, University of Massachusetts, Amherst; Doug Everhart, University of California, Irvine and BACCHUS Network; Jenny Withycombe, Jenny Withycombe Consulting; Jeff O’Brien, Mentors in Violence Prevention; Gordy Heminger, North-American Intra-fraternity Conference; Paul Muecke, Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) member; and Dana O’Neil, ESPN.
Kim Novak, executive director of NovakTalks, will facilitate the morning Q&A session and the afternoon panels.
